After an exciting first month, the first season of Diablo 4 has arrived, but it feels rather lackluster. Season of Villainous is supposed to mark the start of the Diablo 4 season structure that will define the game's post-launch content, but Blizzard hasn't really done much with the concept yet. Blizzard needs to boost Diablo 4's seasonal content

Diablo 4's "Season of Viciousness" has received a lot of attention ahead of its release. During the first month, players from all over the world browsed the game's content, some exhausted by the endless ARPG loop, while others were looking for new game content. The first season also had to introduce players to the game's first-ever battle pass and give them a reason to come back for more Diablo 4 content. While some players may have restarted, the season seems to have fizzled out before it even started.

 

Ahead of Season of the Villain's launch, Blizzard released a patch that pissed off a lot of fans. The patch nerfed every class, increased cooldowns, reduced experience gain, and everything about the game felt slower. Fans were quick to air their concerns on social media, and Blizzard announced a campfire chat to explain their situation. While its new promise to players is great, the damage has already been done.

 

The Season of Vicious content would have had a chance to distract players from the controversy, but the season really didn't do Diablo 4 much favors. The new "Vicious Heart" feature feels like a gem with new skins, "Vicious Corruption" doesn't change the game loop much, adds very few new items, the new dungeons feel like the old dungeons, And the battle pass is kind of bland. Other than the battle pass progression, there really aren't any major selling points for Season 1.

 

The Villain Season was supposed to be an explosive start to Diablo 4's season structure, but it actually felt much the same. While it's too late for Blizzard to go back and correct this, it can't repeat the same mistakes in season two. Future seasons need to come out with more content, their battle pass needs to be exciting, and there needs to be a reason for players to start over. If the studio can't contribute on these fronts, Diablo 4 may soon die.

 

Live games live and die by the quality of their post-launch content, and Diablo 4 has had no luck so far. The game has huge potential and could be one of the best entries in the series, but if Blizzard can't keep the content train going, players will quickly move on to other things. Season two is the studio's chance to prove that it's not out of this fight yet, but it'll have to work hard to win back a scorned and skeptical fanbase.
