Laser technology uses different types of crystals to produce laser lights of multiple wavelengths, to meet specific demands. The technology finds application in spectroscopy, laser cutting, laser beam welding, medical, heat treatment, and several others. At the core of the technology is the crystals that enable production of laser lights at multiple wavelengths.

Nonlinear crystals are crucial in laser technology as they are allow generation of different wavelengths and frequencies of light through nonlinear frequency conversion.

Let’s discuss the use of nonlinear crystals in laser:

Wavelength conversion

One of the most important applications of nonlinear crystals is to convert light from one wavelength to another. This is of great use in obtaining laser lights in spectral ranges that are difficult to achieve directly with laser diodes or other sources.

Frequency conversion

In laser, when it comes to frequency doubling, tripling or high-order harmonic generation, nonlinear crystals come in use. The nonlinear property of the crystal allows photons to interact in a way to generate new photons in different frequencies.

Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs)

The nonlinear crystals are used in OPOs to generate coherent light at different wavelengths. Here, they are used for generating tunable and coherent light in different electromagnetic spectrum.

Parametric amplification and oscillation

Parametric amplification and oscillation setups require use of nonlinear crystals. In parametric amplification, an incident beam amplifies a signal beam in the crystal through nonlinear interactions. In parametric oscillation, the process is self-sustaining, leading to the generation of coherent radiation at new frequencies.

Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG) crystals

These crystals are used in YAG laser rods for various applications. YAG can be doped with different materials to create lasers to suit a particular application.
