A Climate Crisis

Is This Where We Are and What Can We Do to Help?

Published on 15th June 2023.

Debates abound over the potential of a climate crisis. Some claim we are not in a crisis and everything is fine while others claim we are on the brink of human extinction. However, one thing that is strikingly clear is how different our climate is today than even 30 years ago. Natural disasters are on the rise, winters are harsher, summers are almost unbearable, so there is a clear indication that something is going on. Whether it is truly a crisis or just natural change remains a debate, but the key focus should be, what we as humans can do to help curb the potential for any climate crisis.

Be Mindful

One of the biggest things we, as humans, can do for our environment is to be mindful of its existence. The world has been around longer than humans have existed and it deserves our respect. Most of us can attest to the fact that we avoid littering and try to keep our environment as clean as possible, but it is not all about plastics, paper, and various other trash littering the ground. We must be mindful of what we do on a daily basis. Consider supporting organizations that are working to make the world a better place. Give to quality organizations and be mindful in your giving.

Reduce Emissions Where Possible

Cars, buses, trucks, SUVs, trains, and planes are the way we get anywhere we need to go today. They make transportation quick and keep many of us from walking miles upon miles to our destination, but can these devices be overused? Yes, they can.

Transportation is essential. Modern vehicles are great, but did you know that an average car can produce up to 4.6 metric tons of CO2 each year? Think of how many vehicles we see driving around each day. That is a substantial amount of carbon emissions.

Vehicle Emissions

No one is telling you to crush your vehicle and never ride in anything with a gas powered motor ever again. However, reducing the amount your drive can help significantly. Combine trips when possible and plan out routes responsibly to reduce the amount of time your car will be running. Also, if you can walk or bike to something, feel free to do so. Not everyone lives in a city with walkable access to everything, but many of us do, so if you can, walk, bike, or use another form of transportation that does not emit harmful emissions.

Reduce Food Waste

Food waste actually contributes up to 10% of greenhouse gases each year and globally, it is estimated that up to 1 billion tons of food is wasted annually. The key ingredient is to reduce what we throw out. Be mindful of what is being wasted. Try freezing leftovers instead of allowing them to spoil in the fridge or buy smaller portions to reduce the amount that can potentially spoil. Also, try utilizing leftovers in a different way to make an entirely new meal for your family. It just takes a little consideration and ingenuity to reduce your overall food waste.

Reuse Clothing

The Fashion industry is a multi-billion dollar entity that has shown to cause between 8 and 10% of emissions throughout the world. New fashions may seem like something you need, but in reality, you are simply contributing to the problem. Second hand and thrift shops are where we need to be shopping. People throw out perfectly good clothing ending up in landfills across the globe. This waste is simply impractical for improving the climate state of our world.

Instead of investing in brand new clothing all the time, head to one of these second hand or thrift shops. Not only will you save money on some amazing clothes, you will help the environment and possibly find a few brand name or vintage items to add to your wardrobe. Also, never simply throw away your old clothing. Donate them so someone else can get a little more use out of your clothes.

Recycle Clothing

Our world is begging for help. Pollution is at an all time high and we all have to work together to help alleviate the problem. Although you can do nothing about what others do or do not do in the face of the climate crisis, you can control your own action and everything helps.

Take the time to examine your spending habits, energy consumption, and even where you spend your time. See where cuts can be made and make an increased effort to support businesses that are actively trying to make the world a better place. Whether you believe we are in a climate crisis or not, we can all agree that we need to do our part to take care of our planet as it takes such good care of us and those we love.
