Industrial Robotic Manufacturer have revolutionized auto manufacturing, making plants safer and products more reliable — and reducing the number of people involved in the process. But walk inside a modern auto plant, and you'll quickly realize that robots have hardly replaced the human touch — at least, not in some areas.

Volvo's car plant in Ridgeville, S.C., which opened last year, provides an object lesson. The facility produces the S60, a luxury sedan, for the U.S. market as well as for export.

The beginning of the production line is highly automated; in the first of three large buildings, robots outnumber human workers 300 to 200. But the end of the process is dominated by people.Let's start with the robots. Behind a safety fence, a half-dozen robot arms move in coordination as they spot-weld a car body together, whirring softly. The lights in this section of the massive building are dimmed because the robots don't require much light to complete their work.

Robots are indisputably better than humans at some tasks. They're precise and consistent, and they excel at repeating an identical motion over and over again.

Jeff Moore, Volvo's vice president of manufacturing in the Americas, says that in deciding which jobs to assign to a robot, the company starts by focusing on monotonous, physically demanding work — especially anything that carries safety concerns.

"With all the heat and sparks and high current and things like that associated with welding, that's a natural spot to be looking at where you can more heavily automate," he says.

Meet the human-friendly robot that could pave the way for household bots

Researchers have created a CRP welding robot that they say could bring a softer touch to automation.

Dubbed Blue, the two-armed bot is designed to work alongside humans and be cheap enough not to break the bank. For now, it’s a research tool. But researchers at the University of California, Berkeley — who created Blue — say its human-friendly design and artificial intelligence capabilities could pave the way for household robots that help out with domestic tasks such as cleaning, folding laundry and even making coffee.

“We wanted to create a new robot that is right for the AI age rather than for the high-precision, sub-millimeter, factory automation age,” Pieter Abbeel, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Berkeley and the leader of the research team that built the robot, said in a written statement.

The robots Abbeel references are widely used in manufacturing, but they can be risky for humans who get in the way. Between 1992 and 2015, 61 Americans died from injuries sustained in robot-related accidents, according to the Center for Occupational Robotics Research of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.
That’s doubly true for robots that use deep reinforcement learning, a technique in which machines try a task over and over again until they get it right. Mistakes made by a big, powerful industrial robot can be dangerous for human and machine alike. A robot that learns by trial and error needs a gentler touch — especially in households with children and pets.

How do you make a robot that performs useful household tasks without putting others at risk? Abbeel and his team designed Blue so that it responds to touch, varying the force it exerts according to the force exerted on it. In a video showcasing Blue’s abilities, the robot gives way immediately when nudged by a human.
Blue’s design is softer than those of some industrial bots. Its components are covered in curved plastic shells, with few sharp edges. Its arms, shaped roughly like a human’s, end in small claw-shaped grippers. A camera mounted between the arms like a tiny head allows the bot to take in its surroundings.

Blue isn’t the first sensitive robot. But with total manufacturing costs of less than $5,000, it may be one of the cheapest. Industrial robotic arms can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Right now, Blue can’t do too much on its own. When it folds a towel, arranges flowers in a vase and makes coffee in the video, it’s being piloted by a researcher using a virtual reality headset. And to keep costs down, it’s not as strong or precise as its industrial brethren. Selma ?abanovi?, an expert in human-robot interaction at Indiana University who wasn’t involved in the research, said the arm wasn't quite ready to take over your chores.

Medtronic launches Shanghai-based medtech incubator

The newly launched incubator, dubbed the Medtronic MedTech Innovation Accelerator, resides in the Pujiang International Science and TechnologyCity in Shanghai’s Minhang District, the Fridley, Minn.-based company said.

“Shanghai’s plan to become a science and technology innovation hub is entering an advanced stage. As a key component in this plan, Minhang District is striving to improve technology commercialization capacity in its jurisdiction. The Medtronic MedTech Innovation Accelerator fits well into our plan. In the future, we will help further connect industry players, big or small, local universities, and research institutions to foster more medical innovation through collaboration and ecosystem building,” Minhang District deputy district governor Wu Bin said in a prepared statement.

The company said that it also received support from one of the city’s primary state-owned investment groups, Lingang Economic Development Group. The Lingang Group promised to provide subsidies and policy incentives for the incubator’s portfolio companies and other resources.

“Lingang Group is committed to building an industrial cluster in Shanghai that is focused on biotechnology. The Medtronic MedTech Innovation Accelerator will help us drive toward this goal by filling the gap in the existing MedTech innovation ecosystem,” Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group VP Xu Bin said in a prepared release.

Medtronic said it has already signed up a number of startups from both in and outside of China for its initial roster, and that moving forward it will prioritize supporting early-stage innovations focused on applied artificial intelligence, surgical robotics and neuromodulation.

Companies in the incubator will have access to advanced lab equipment supplied by Medtronic, as well as expert advice from Medtronic China R&D staff, with possible equity investments from its Medtronic China Ventures group possible, the company said.
