In even smaller third-tier cities, new-home prices edged up an average 0.8 percent from a month ago, 0.3 percentage points faster than April. Prices of existing homes in the 35 cities rose 0.6 percent, unchanged from a month ago.

Countrywide, new-home prices in Xi’an of Shaanxi Province recorded the biggest month-over-month increase of 2 percent, while in the pre-used housing market, Hohhot of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region led all with a 1.8 percent gain, according to the bureau.

“Generally speaking, as buyer momentum started to ease around the country following a rebound after the Spring Festival, the country’s housing market kind of lacks a major boost for further price growth,” according to Lu Wenxi, senior research manager of Shanghai Centaline Property Consultants Co.

On a year-on-year basis, prices of new homes in first- and third-tier cities both rose at the same pace as in April and decelerated in second-tier cities by 0.2 percentage points.

In the preoccupied residential market, prices in all-tiered cities rose at a slower pace in May, decelerating by 0.5 percentage points in first-tier cities and by 0.2 percentage points in both second- and third-tier cities.

New-home sales in China rose at a slower pace in the first five months of this year, the bureau said in an earlier statement released last Friday.

Between January and May, about 4.5 trillion yuan (US$650 billion) worth of new homes, excluding government-subsidized affordable housing, were sold across China, an increase of 8.9 percent from the same period a year ago. That compared with the 10.6 percent growth recorded in the first four months.

The area of new homes sold in the first five months totaled 487 million square meters, a year-on-year dip of 0.7 percent, reverting from a 0.4 percent increase registered in the first four months.

“Ram Katzir, who is an incredible Israeli artist, designed the space. He created this huge set. It plays a huge part in the work. The stage has several layers, which goes along with the idea of the bigger picture,” she said.Wertheim was also joined by longtime collaborator Ran Bagno. “We took a break after many years of working together, and it’s great to go back. His music really fits this work.”
Another familiar face in the team is that of costume designer Sasson Kedem. Here, Wertheim called on Kedem to go against the usual gender-neutral look and design specified outfits for the men and the women.

“This piece deals a lot with the idea of the Garden of Eden, with Adam and Eve and free will. There is a very important moment in the text about Adam and Eve, in which Adam blames Eve for tempting him with the apple. We worked with that concept, and so the clothing had to be different for the women and the men,” she explained.

“I think the dancers look different in this piece than in others. They are such an incredible cast; the talent level is through the roof. The dancers were full collaborators on this work,” she said.And though she is still in the throes of the process, Wertheim is able to appraise a slight change in her aesthetic in “Leela.”

According to an unrelated report published by the American Academy of Dermatology , UV exposure during gel manicures should be a concern for everyone, but especially for people who are highly sensitive to UV light. Chris G. Adigun, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in nail disorders, says that although the UVA rays don’t burn the skin like UVB rays, they do penetrate the skin to damage DNA and collagen, which can lead to premature aging and may increase skin cancer risk.

But, based on a study he’s read about the subject, Dr. Rubenstein says he’s not sure the UV lamps are strong enough to cause cancer.

“It showed, in general, we can say that ultraviolet light is so low, the exposure is so low, in general it’s safe with gel nails. It takes, multiple, multiple, multiple exposures in order to have any danger,” Dr. Rubenstein said.

The exposure from the salon UV lamps is not the same as one could get from, for example, a tanning bed, he said.

“The question is, was it a family history thing that she had, or was it due to the fact that she has gel nails? There’s no way to know,” Dr. Rubenstein said.

Rubenstein says anyone receiving a gel manicure should wear sunscreen or gloves with the tips cut off, or ask for an LED lamp instead of a UV lamp, to protect their hands.
